An ad for the show proclaimed, "Now in Toronto. Canada's Sensational 20-Year-Old Piano Stylist Modern and Classical Programme (with rhythm accompaniment).”Fans could purchase tickets at the King Edward Hotel or at Massey Hall's box office. Prices ranged from ninety cents up to $2.40. The Globe and Mail headline the following day proclaimed, "Swing Pianist Stirs Massey Hall Throng.” Reviewer Dillon O’Leary wrote, "Oscar Peterson's first appearance in Massey Hall last night had the large audience shouting for encores as he left, and revealed a swing pianist of wide abilities and a young man with a promising career. Peterson's set included "mainly standard tunes of bygone years, which have weathered the test of time." Following this successful debut, Peterson returned to Massey the following year. The popular pianist would go on to play Massey four more times over the course of his long and distinguished career. – Excerpt from Massey Hall by David McPherson, published by permission of Dundurn Press

Seat Dedication | Peter Katz

"I'm singer-songwriter Peter Katz, and the list of special memories that I associate with Massey Hall is a long one. It's a place where you stamp moments in time, where you reencounter your soul as you bond around a shared experience with all the other souls gathered there. As an artist, it also inspires you to aspire for greatness, to be worthy of that stage. I wanted to dedicate a few seats to the people who had nurtured my love of music. In a world where we have so much 'stuff', and it all feels so consumable and impermanent, to know that there's these seats there, with their names on them, and that every night, people are sitting in those seats, getting planted with new seeds of inspiration and aspiration... I can't think of a more special gift to be able to give."A limited number of seat dedication plaques are still available inside the Allan Slaight Auditorium at Massey Hall.
